Dreams From My Father Summary

Dreams From My Father Summary

"Dreams From My Father," is a moving story about President Obama's early years. It focuses on race and its inheritance. It's the journey of a young man searching to discover himself in his roots. Along the way there are friends and challenges to stimulate him. "Dreams From My Father" is an elegant and compelling read.

Composed in 1996, Barak Obama reveals his roots, their discoveries, and the impressions left on him. The book starts with Obama as a young boy living in Hawaii with his mother and her parents. He has no memories of his father, only stories that his mother and grandparents tell. Obama comes from a mixed heritage - a white mother and a black father who lives in Kenya. His mother is open minded, idealistic, naïve in one sense, world-wise in another. His grandparents love him unconditionally.

As a young boy, his mother marries a man from Indonesia and they go to live there. Obama speaks fondly of his step-father, and learns several life lessons from him, but unfortunately his mother's relationship with his step-father doesn't last. His mother sends him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents so he can attend a prestigious Hawaiian school. Soon, his mother and sister go back to Hawaii, but he stays with his grandparents which give him a sense of consistency. He learns his grandfather's strengths and weaknesses, but never really comes to see him as the father figure he's seeking.

Obama has one encounter with his father when he's ten in Hawaii. Obama is a little in awe, a little overwhelmed. His father's visit isn't long and leaves Obama with more questions than answers.

The book then moves on to cover Obama's life in Chicago as a community organizer. It's challenging work that is rarely rewarding, but Obama gives it his all. Then a relative from Kenya calls to tell him his father has died, but Obama's not quite sure how to feel about that or how to react.

Several weeks later, his Kenyan half-sister, Auma, makes contact with him. Auma gives him a peek into his father's life in Kenya. Obama is intrigued by the life Auma leads and wants to learn more about their father. Before he leaves community organizing to go to Harvard Law School, he makes arrangements to visit Auma in Kenya.

In Kenya, Obama discovers a family he didn't even know. His father had at least four wives, and Obama has a slew of brothers and sisters who are living in their father's shadow. Obama and Auma visit with one their grandfather's wives, "Granny." She tells Obama's father and grandfather stories to him. It's a riveting tale of two people and it helps to define those aspect of Obama's self and his heritage he was seeking.

"Dreams From My Father," is an engrossing read. Verbose at times, Obama's personal stories are heartwarming and easily connect with readers. The book defines the "mettle" behind a man - and a president.

Barack Obama Credentials

Much has been said about our Democratic candidate for president. He has achieved rock star status. Because of his silver tongue, many look at him as someone who can "save" us from ourselves.

I learned many years ago when something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

After doing much research, I have found out a lot about Obama. There is a lot of fluff on the Internet, much of which isn't true. However If one checks the right resources and double checks against other information, one can be reasonably sure to have arrived at the proper conclusions.

As I have written in other blogs, Obama is a Muslim, regardless as to how they try to spin it, he was born of a Muslim father, Muslim law states that if your father is a Muslim, you are a Muslim. No amount of converting will change that. His name which is the same as his fathers, is Arabic,

Junior's first name Barack, is a deviation of Barak, the name of the horse that Mohammad rode into heaven.

Obama has many, many long time ties to the Islam world, his Harvard education was financed, at least in part by a prominent member of the Arab world, (they recruited Barack many years ago), this same person has ties to the Saudi prince, Oh mar Qaddafi, and every prominent Arab and radical leader in the world. The Muslims have contributed billions of dollars to our American Universities and Colleges, including Columbia. Any wonder that the Iran leader was allowed to speak there?

With the power these influential people have, can you conceive the consequences of having someone in the White House that is sympathetic to their goals of world domination? They are attacking us from within and no one realizes it!

They own many of our financial institutions, including Citigroup. Over the last decades much money has been sent to the Middle East to purchase oil that we should be drilling for right in America. This money has in turn been spent buying us out. Because of this, many influential people in this country are under their thumb.

His associations include terrorists, extremists, and many people who don't like America very well. He has a problem wearing a flag lapel pin, standing at attention during the playing of our National Anthem, has said there are 57 states, (he will know where Alaska is before this is over.) Doesn't know the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, flipped off Hillary on live TV, called Sarah Palin a pig, (he knew exactly what he was saying), and referred to his Muslim faith on a Sunday morning talk show.

For the most part he spent a lot of time growing up in Indonesia, so he has no idea of what the American culture is all about.

I haven't confirmed this, but have every reason to believe, with his background and the history of the people he associates with, the FBI wouldn't accept him as an agent.

If the FBI wouldn't hire him, should we?

I have traversed the globe in search of truth, my truth, to read some of my views :

Barak Obama on Unity & Healing

A Man of Unity and Healing: Barak Obama on “a More Perfect Union”

Author: Gita Saraydarian

Barak Obama’s speech on March 18th, 2008 will go down in history as one of the great speeches given in our time. I highly recommend hearing it or reading the text. His spiritual maturity is a shining light. He words carried depth and showed a person who is not afraid to tackle sensitive issues by going to the heart of them and revealing them for what they are.

What did I like about his speech?

1. Instead of spitefulness and rancor and self-defense, he elevated the problems of race, hatred, divisiveness, inequality and such by framing them as a process of unfoldment that we all need to care about. It is a process of becoming a more perfect union on the individual or national levels, a process of integration with our essential being.

2. He showed that we do not throw out a person from our life because we disagree with him. Not everything said and preached in places of worship are accepted and agreed upon by every single person sitting in the pews. With his loving care, Obama may have a better impact on the Pastor Wright than he would have if he condemned him as a person. We are all subject to make mistakes and it would be a lonely world if every time someone made a mistake everyone left and abandoned him. Obama understood his Pastor because he understands his own inner workings and understands how our personal experiences shape and condition our life narrative.

3. He showed that we do not need to perpetuate hatred, especially in our political discussions. This is what is lacking. Pundits and newscasters are all looking for divisiveness to bite on and tear at. Journalists and pundits cannot stand to find harmony or goodness; they thrive on division and hatred and puny and vindictive attitudes rather than gravitas and generosity of human spirit. Interviewers pounce and interrupt so they look important and smart, trying every trick they can to belittle and trap the person into saying something he or she will later regret. It is such a comedy to watch!

Yes, we do have hatred in our hearts and in this country. We need to think how to face it and not let it go for another 20 years or more, ruining more people’s lives and diminishing the very soul and spirit of our children. It is time we grow up! We have so much hateful rhetoric now in our country against Muslims, Mormons, Gays, Mexicans, New Agers; you name it. Imagine someone telling you that if you have a name like Hussein that terrorists will dance in the streets if you are elected? What does that say to every little boy name Hussein? Separatism and hatred are not the purview of some people; they are qualities that people of all races and religions and colors and tribes and nations and regions have in common. These traits are most visible when people live in fear, in ignorance, are misled, are encouraged to hate, are mis-educated, are taught to believe that different is equal to bad, are led to believe that the world is one of material existence alone, that scarcity rules, that nothing ever changes, that there are “those people” there who are trying to get us and so on and on and on…. Every person has some little seed of hatred that, when fanned, will turn into regrettable acts.

4. Leaders have the moral responsibility to condemn hatred and separative acts, even if they have to condemn it from inside their own “tent.” The best revelation is the one that comes from inside and the best healing can happen from those on the inside who understand what has just been revealed to them.

5. All leaders — religious and political especially — have a deep responsibility to be sensitive to what they are truly preaching. Some (not all) preachers and political leaders preach hatefulness and separatism. Divisiveness sells and puts fear into people and fear makes people more “obedient” to your message and your will and your agenda. Preachers and leaders have the responsibility to uncover, discover, and articulate social injustices; to articulate righteousness; to show how to heal; and most of all, to give hope that change is possible. Giving hope is the greatest service a religious or political leader can do.

6. The definition of being a believer, a good person, or a patriot is not the single definition given by those in positions of power or by pundits or journalists. The best patriots are not necessarily those who wear flags on their lapels and ribbons as armbands; the best patriots are those who want to expose the pain and the misery and the inequality and bring it to light so that it can be solved.

7. We heal only when we face and identify the illness. Our illness is a spiritual illness of separatism and materialism. We need to identify it inside of our individual hearts. We will see that we have a huge heart and, when it is open and cleaned out, we have nothing to fear. There are millions of Americans with open hearts. We can increase that number because it makes human sense. We do not have to fall in love with each person. As my Mom says, “You do not have to put your sleeping bag next to those you do not like; it is OK not to like everyone. You can choose to put your sleeping bag somewhere else. But you do not have to kick and hate the person either.” Good thought; sounds better in Armenian.

8. Each human being has inner contradictions. These are the contradictions of soul vs. personality needs. The principles that we believe in are not always the principles that we live by every single minute of the day. Contradictions of race and religion and national security are huge and complex issues and reveal inner contradictions. They are not going away by themselves. I am not searching for a state of peace where we hold hands and sing “kumbaya” at the end of the discussion. We are not suddenly going to be hit by lightning and resolve everything completely. But just the process of talking and opening and recognizing the internal contradictions takes the venom out of the human condition and opens us up to seeing that others live under the same fears and questions as we do. And, we can do something about it.

What open-minded people are facing now in all walks of life is the same old fight that Arjuna faced in the story of Bhagavat Gita. It is the fight of the growing human soul faced with the contradictions of his material self, the old against the new. Old, entrenched interests do not go “quietly into the night.” They struggle to hold on; they are identified and their whole existence is tied to their identifications. We need boldness in every human endeavor to continuously face the challenges of our new living conditions. We especially need courageous Pastors and Rabbis and Imams and Spiritual and Political Leaders and Teachers of all sorts who can articulate these contradictions for us. We need True Leadership.

I congratulate Barak Obama for such honesty, integrity, and the sober, inner sense of righteousness to call the issues as they truly are. He has given us the freedom to address issues that are deep inside of us. Humanity needs such brave souls to take us to the unfoldment of our potentials of being more perfect. I think it is a worthy cause.

Is Barak Obama Really Black?

Is Barak Really Black?

Author: Micahyah Hawkins

The word “black” has always echoed the connotations of evil, gloom, disaster and pessimism. Whether it is to describe the color of a man’s skin or the content of his character, black continually reflects the things that we find less desirable, reputable or noble. Throughout our most recent centuries, we have willingly latched on to the ominous ideas of what we believe the word “black” to mean. But, belief does not reflect knowledge. Through knowledge, we gain meaning and meaning, expands our horizons of truth.

Black is a word that can be found in any dictionary. What you may not find however, are the original meanings of this small, simple word. The first languages of man, (Hebrew, Chaldee and Aramaic) all describe the word “black” as meaning: to lighten, to shine, brightness. Even in Old English, black is described as “white” and “bright”; hardly the definitions that we have familiarized ourselves with throughout the years. Simply put, black can also represent hope, truth and the dawning of a new day. It doesn’t always have to be misery, misfortune and madness.

Barak Obama is a symbol of commencing prosperity. He is a light in a despairing world, which is shadowed by helplessness, greed and degeneracy. Carrying a torch of hope, he is inspiring us to accept the challenge of change. He knows that the past is in the past. It cannot be altered nor rewritten. It is now a part of the dust of the ages. We must move forward now and leave behind our beliefs of what “black” really is and discover what black has always been.

It is impossible to gauge the essence of a man by the color of his skin. Indeed, why would you even try to do so? Black, yes, Barak is black. If some individuals still find it impossible to move beyond his pigmentation, then some final thoughts are necessary.

Most names today come from the Hebrew, German, Latin, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh languages. To find out the meaning of a particular name, you must trace the etymology. Looking at the name “Barak” in the Hebrew, Chaldee and Aramaic languages, one discovers a most interesting thing. Barak means: to shine, to gleam, brightness and splendor – all descriptive words for light, bright and white – all words describing “black”.

In the days old, a name represented everything about an individual. Even today, in many European, African and Middle Eastern countries, great importance is placed on a name. History shows us that a name reflected one’s reputation, his internal essence and inward nature. It even revealed who a person was and who they were to become. Their name was a compilation of their present and their future. As for Barak Obama… well, it isn’t a coincidence as to why the world is embracing a hopeful optimism and an aspiring belief that tomorrow really can be a better day. Where there’s light, there is hope and that my friend, is enough for now.
